This post might just stir up strife and cause problems, but imma write it anyway.
There are some Adventists who think that, given that we are part of the “remnant Church” and that we have “present truth” and we are called to “come out from among them” that there is nothing to learn from other denominations and we are thus not supposed to (or it is unnecessary to) listen to or read the works of any other person, save for the Bible and Ellen White. I beg to differ.
Some of the most Holy Spirit-led people I have met are not-Adventists. Some of the meanest people I’ve met are Adventists. But I digress (that’s a post for another day).
My philosophy has always been that everyone has something to teach everyone else and that it would behoove me to remain (cautiously and critically) open. Like my Dad always says, sometimes you have to “pick sense from nonsense.” That’s not to say that the following people preach nonsense, although I don’t necessarily agree wholeheartedly with the theology of the following speakers. What I am saying, however, is that I have gleaned many valuable lessons from their preaching and teaching. They have inspired me, they have caused me to go back to my Bible and they have challenged me to go deeper with and have more faith in God. If anyone can do that, I say they are worth listening to, regardless of whether they are Adventist or not.
(And, by the way, I’d love to hear from you about preachers who have impacted your life. I’d like to add to my list. 🙂 ).
So here goes.
Nick Vujicic
I have his books. I love him. Just watch the video.
Pastor Rick Warren
I like his back-to-basics, simple teaching.
Pastor John Gray
Pastor John Gray is the Associate Pastor at Lakewood Church (yes, Joel Osteen’s church). By the way he preaches, one wonders why they don’t just make him senior pastor. Why is this man relegated to Wednesday night service? God knows. I like Pastor Gray because he preaches from the Word and he stays in the Word. And plus he’s funny. And he can sing. He might as well be an Adventist because he preaches like one.
Father Robert Barron
I know, I know…he’s Catholic. And although I don’t agree with him doctrinally, I’ve been blessed by many of his videos on his YouTube channel, such as this one:
Bishop T.D. Jakes
Yes, he slighted Adventists in one of his sermons, but there is an undeniable anointing on this man. He has dropped so much knowledge and shed so much on the Word for me that I have sometimes been floored. This is just one of my favourite sermons.
Priscilla Shirer
I saw her in War Room and fell in love with her since then. She can preach! My Word…
…and her hair is hers.
Steven Furtick
My sister put this video on my Facebook wall one day…yeah…what a timely Word.
This is not an exhaustive list… I’d like to know some of your favourites!
Hi Simone. I’ve listened to several preachers/teachers during my spiritual walk, inside and outside of my faith. And I’ve learned to pick the meat from the bone. If I had to choose a favourite, I’d say Dr. Charles Stanley. He’s calm, fatherly and direct when delivering the message.

Yes!! I like Dr. Stanley too! My Mom loves him too. He preaches in such a simple and calm way. 🙂

It’s interesting how people want to slim down your reading and listening lists just because they’ve decided to have a particular view about what we “should” be listening to. I love your list! And totally agree that there is something to be gleaned from many Minister’s regardless of the particular denomination. The truth is, once the message is based in the word and consistent with your fundamental values and beliefs as a Believer, you can grow – and that’s what this game is about. Took a break from the blog world but happy to return and see your wonderful posts…love reading your blog!
